 Durham County Commissioner speaks

Michael Page, the Durham County commissioner chairman and director of campus

ministries at NCCU, said it's important for students to hear from someone like Smith.

"Students need to hear the good and the bad," Page said.  "They need to see both sides

of life.  They think that once they graduate from college, it's smooth sailing.  I want them to

understand that obstacles will come into their lives but they can overcome them."

In addition to being a pastor, Smith is a church consultant and much sought-after

motivational speaker.  He has also taught seminars to inmates on death row at Central

Prison in Raleigh, the Butner Federal Correctional Complex and the Federal Maximum

Security Prison in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Smith said he is often approached after a seminar by people looking for reassurance.

"I always get one or two who come up emotionally and in tears because they're going

through something themselves," Smith said.  "I hope I'm helping to change someone's life."

THE HERALD-SUN  Sunday, January 18, 2009 SECTION C

Once a prominent attorney practicing law in Henderson, NC, Reverend James W. Smith's

gambling habit was the source that cause him to loose everything, including his first wife, and

eventually gambling caused him his freedom.  He only holds himself accountable for his

downward spiral, and has penned his memoirs, Deal by Me: A Golden Opportunity Blown.

An excellent storyteller, Rev. Smith expertly describes his horrendous hard times when a

window closed during those dark days, but as one of God's faithful servants the book conveys

a new door opens, and his life is turned completely around.

THE SPECTACULAR MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2008

James, what a wonderful presentation of a gut-wrenching story of such a highly personal

nature you have put to paper.  I thoroughly enjoyed every sentence of your wonderful book.  I

could go on reading your life story through countless numbers of pages, but being an author

myself, I fully realize that you have to bring each project to some type of conclusion.
